Jim
Matheson
Jim joined Flagship Ventures in 2000 and focuses on new ventures in the
IT and
special technology (e.g. nano-technology, specialty materials, and
energy) arenas.
He brings to this task 20 years of technology and leadership experience
across
a variety of organizations and roles designing, engineering and
deploying sophisticated
technology platforms. Jim formerly served as a Navy fighter pilot
including duties
flying combat missions from aircraft carriers, and as a TOPGUN
Instructor. He
also gained broad experience in emerging weapons system design, testing
and procurement,
and was deeply involved in many of the military’s IT
modernization initiatives.
Jim
earned an MBA from The Harvard Business School, and a Bachelor of
Science (with
honors) from the United States Naval Academy and he continues to serve
as a Commander
in the US Naval Reserves. He serves on the boards of Flagship portfolio
companies
Avidimer Therapeutics, e-Dialog, Genstruct, Mascoma Energy Corporation,
Tira
Wireless and Trusted Network Technologies, and Zingku. He was
previously a director
of Yantra (acquired by Sterling Commerce / SBC) and Flamenco Networks
(acquired
by SOA Software). Jim is on the Board of Black Horse Capital; a New
York based
Hedge Fund, Common Impact (a non-profit providing IT services to other
non-profits),
the Center for Women & Enterprise, and is actively
involved in numerous entrepreneurial and venture capital organizations
including
the MIT Enterprise Forum, The Deshpande Center, and The Service Academy
Business
Network.
Scott
Brown
Scott Brown has more than 20 years of entrepreneurial management
experience
leading start-up service and energy companies. After consulting with
Bain & Company
in the early 1980s, he joined the founding management team of First
Solar in
1988, one of the first thin film photovoltaic manufacturers in the U.S.
and now
a leading solar technology provider. He left First Solar in 1989 to
become President
and CEO of Glasstech Solar, Inc, a manufacturer of semiconductor
equipment for
the photovoltaic industry. During his tenure, Glasstech established
several world
records for thin film photovoltaic efficiency. During the late 1990s
and early
2000s, Mr. Brown consulted extensively with state agencies on renewable
energy
policy, with solar technology and module component companies on
strategy and
new business development, and with private equity firms on clean energy
investments.
In
2004, Mr. Brown co-founded New Energy Capital and has led all aspects
of company
formation, deal origination, execution and portfolio management. He is
the co-founder
and practice leader of the infrastructure practice at VantagePoint
Venture Partners.
Mr. Brown is a member of the National Advisory Council of the National
Renewable
Energy Laboratory and the founder of Sustainable Energy for
Development, Inc.
He holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College and a J.D. from Harvard Law
School.
Jerry
Bird
Mr. Bird joined MTDC in 2005. Over the past eight years, he has worked
closely
with the MTDC staff in four co-investments. He has over 19 years of
investing
and financial experience. Most recently, Mr. Bird was a partner at
Brook Venture
Partners and Nova MedVentures. Prior to that, he was President of
Boston-based
Claflin Capital Management which he joined as a general partner in 1996
and was
a general partner of the three most recent funds.
While at Claflin, Mr. Bird led
over a dozen investments in early-stage technology companies. He was on
the boards
of e-Travel, Inc. which was sold to Oracle, Andover.net which went
public in
1999 and subsequently merged with VA Linux, LinkSoft Technologies which
was purchased
by Quadramed, Nexcen Technologies which was purchased by UCMS, and
Bitpipe, Inc.
which was recently purchased by TechTarget.
Prior to joining Claflin Capital
Management, he spent 10 years at BankBoston in several varied
capacities. He
worked in the bank's energy division, two years managing an operational
division
of the bank's commercial loan portfolio, and three years in the bank's
emerging
markets investment banking group arranging capital markets financing
for emerging
markets companies.
Mr. Bird graduated with a BA degree from Dartmouth
College
in 1980 and received his MBA from the Tuck School at Dartmouth in 1986.
He is
also a board member and past chairman of Crossroads for Kids, Chairman
of the
Town of Andover Open Space Committee, and is on the Advisory Board of
the Trust
for Public Land. He lives in Andover, MA, with his wife and three
children.
George
McMillan
Mr. McMillan joined Ze-gen as a Director in November 2004. Mr. McMillan
is President
and Chief Operating Officer of Balanced Scorecard Collaborative, a
position he
accepted in January 2005. Mr. McMillan has served in executive
capacities for
more than 20 years and his career includes combined experience in
supply chain
management, media, and professional services, with demonstrated
excellence in
both financial and business operations. Prior to joining the
Collaborative, George
was Chief Execuitve Officer of CMGI, where as both Chief Execuitve
Officer and
Chief Financial Officer, he succcessfuly repositioned the financially
distressed
internet company into a billion dollar leader in supply-chain
management. He
joined CMGI in July 2001 from BMG Direct, a unit of Bertelsmann AG,
where he
served as President and Chief Executive Officer for more than 4 years.
Prior
to joining BMG Direct, George served as Chief Operating Officer and
Chief Financial
Officer of Renaissance Solutions, the technology and management
consulting firm.
There, he helped guide the firm from 15 members to more than 300
professionals,
and through three public offerings of its shares. He also guided
Renaissance
through 13 consecutive quarters of rising revenue and accelerating
profit and
earnings per share performance. George earned his M.B.A. with
distinction from
Harvard Graduate School of Business, his J.D. cum laude from Harvard
Law School
and his A.B. in Economics, Phi Beta Kappa, from Stanford University.
Michael
Lucy
Michael Lucy is President and CEO of Northeast Gas Markets, LLC (NEGM)
a Delaware
Corporation providing energy project development, management and
consulting services.
He joined the Ze-gen board in early 2007.
Mr. Lucy has served in a variety of
capacities in the energy business during his 30+ year career. Before
forming
the NEGM joint venture, he was a senior officer at J. Makowski Company
and its
successor, US Generating Company. He held various corporate positions
including
Senior Vice President, Corporate Relations responsible for Government
Affairs,
Public Relations and Environmental Policy. From 1994 to 1996 he was
President
of US Generating (Canada) Ltd., based in Calgary, responsible for the
company’s interests in the Canadian “gas
patch”.
During
the late 1980’s Mr. Lucy was Chairman of the Government
Relations
Committee of the Iroquois Gas Transmission System project, a consortium
of major
Canadian and U.S. Northeast gas companies, and led the team that
secured regulatory
permits and rights of way to establish the first major new pipeline
system into
the U.S. Northeast in forty years. In his project management capacity
Mr. Lucy
serves as President of Alberta Northeast Gas, Limited (ANE) which is a
long term
natural gas supply consortium representing fifteen local gas
distribution companies
(LDCs) throughout the U.S. Northeast.
Mr. Lucy is a current Director and past
President of The New England/Canada Business Council and has served on
the Board
of Directors of The Northeast Gas Association. Before joining J.
Makowski Company,
Mr. Lucy served with the U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Service
Officer.
He served as International Economist for the Office of International
Energy Policy.
Mr.
Lucy holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Massachusetts and
a Certificate
in Economic/Commercial studies from the U.S. Foreign Service Institute.
